World-first: Rootcause uses AI to offer rapid assessment of major AI legislation
Rootcause has published groundbreaking analysis of the amendments laid by Members of the European Parliament to the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, using world-first AI-assisted methodologies.
The EU AI Act is one of the most significant pieces of contemporary legislation concerning AI technologies in the world. We mapped the more than 3,300 amendments that were made to the Bill, using AI itself to categorise this large volume of data so we could analyse it based on themes such as likely impact on human rights and open versus closed attitudes to tech.
We also built a network map of how MEPs worked together, weaving the story of who influenced the Bill, and how. We were able to see that all MEPs worked within their parliamentary groupings on these amendments – reflecting how issues fell, predictably, along party and group lines.
The potential of AI-powered research for progressive causes
These findings highlight the potential of AI to help advocacy and policy professionals get to grips with the evolution and potential impact of legislation in a faster and less resource intensive way that simply wasn’t possible before.
By generating insights on trends, knowledge flows and influence in almost real-time, work like this can support progressive organisations to move with the rapid pace of change in our digital environment.
Access to the data
We’re pleased to share the spreadsheet itself with the permission of the funder. Please feel free to take a look, interrogate the data and see for yourself what AI is currently capable of doing with policy data like this.
Got a question? Want to share your take on the data, or explore how this methodology could support your organisation’s goals?
